Are You Playing to Win or Just Trying Not to Lose?

The mindset shift that decides how far you'll actually go.

There's a big difference between playing to win and playing not to lose.

When you’re playing not to lose, every move you make comes from a place of caution, safety, and fear. It’s the classic scarcity mindset: you’re guarding what you already have, scared to take risks or chase after bigger opportunities. You're essentially in defensive mode—carefully tiptoeing around, hoping nothing goes wrong.

On the other hand, playing to win is entirely different. It means you’re proactive, willing to take thoughtful risks, and genuinely optimistic about your outcomes—even if they seem a bit ambitious or unrealistic. It's an abundance mindset: you believe there's always more out there, and you're constantly reaching for bigger and better things.

Here's how you know the difference:

  • Playing not to lose looks like hesitating, making minimal effort, and avoiding mistakes at all costs. You're holding back, worried about criticism or failure.

  • Playing to win feels exciting and expansive. You make bold decisions, embrace uncertainty, and welcome challenges as opportunities to grow.

Interestingly, research shows that operating from scarcity—playing not to lose—actually lowers your cognitive ability and stifles creativity. It literally makes you less intelligent in stressful situations. Meanwhile, embracing an abundance mindset opens your mind, sharpens your thinking, and allows you to perform at your absolute best.
